Being Church in Strange Times - 29

Wednesday 17 June 2020

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It was very good to see some of you last Sunday at the 'test' service. Thank you so much to all those who contributed to that service and to those who worked hard to ensure that things ran smoothly. I look forward now to seeing more of you this coming Sunday, 21st June when the church is open for everyone.

If you are intending to come on Sunday and haven't yet done so, please book your seat as soon as possible. You can do this either online, using this link OR by ringing the office on 031 352 85 67. Please book a single seat if you are coming alone and two seats together if you are from the same household. If there are three or more of you, please ring the office.

Booking will close at midnight this evening online, but if you want to ring the office please ring before 1pm today as the office will be closed after that. We need to finalise the booking on Wednesdays to enable time for all the subsequent organisation.

If you are reading, leading the intercessions, operating the beamer, playing the piano, or you are the head sidesperson then a seat will be assigned for you. Everyone else, including the other sidespeople, needs to book their seat.

As last Sunday, there will be a service in the church and a service in the hall, running at the same time. I will lead the service and preach in church, and David will lead the service and read my sermon in the hall. The service will also continue to be put online. As we meet to worship in church we will be remembering all those of you who cannot yet return to church. Let us remember our unity in Christ.

The planning and organisation necessary for services in these strange times, both in church and online, is quite complicated. I am grateful to all those involved. for their hard work, their time and patience.

It is good to try to keep a sense of humour as we deal with the restrictions and complications involved in running services in church at the moment. For light relief, the following humorous clip may make you smile (though I think it would be even funnier if we were Baptists!).

Tomorrow, our lectio divina meeting is at 10.30am. This involves listening to a short passage of Scripture several times with periods of silence in between. At the end of the silence there is an opportunity to share our insights together. It is a wonderful opportunity to meditate on some words of Scripture and allow those words to feed our hearts and minds. If you would like to join us, please let me know and I can send you the link.

Our Men's Bible Study Group, and Coffee Discussion Group will continue as usual, via Zoom, on Sunday.

I end with a prayer:

O Holy Spirit, giver of light and life,
impart to us thoughts better than our own thoughts,
and prayers better than our own prayers,
and powers better than our own powers,
that we may spend and be spent,
in the ways of love and goodness,
after the perfect image of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen

With love in Christ,
Helen
