Being Church at All Times – 234

Thursday 13 November 2024

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

No doubt many of us have heard the news this week about the resignation of Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, following a report about the shocking abuse carried out by John Smyth. To be clear: the Archbishop was not accused of any abuse himself, but was criticized for responding inadequately to this case of abuse when it was brought to his attention. This news highlights how important it is to follow safeguarding guidelines and makes our service on Sunday even more relevant. Please do come along.

Sunday 17th November: Safeguarding Sunday
During this service we will be reflecting on our need to care for the vulnerable, old and young. There will also be information about the practicalities of safeguarding and we will be praying for Cecily and Maxine, our Safeguarding officers.

Christmas Bazaar, Friday 22nd November, Saturday 23rd November
This event is fast approaching! We still need volunteers to help to set up, to bake cakes, to run stalls and especially to clear up at 3pm on the Saturday.

If you can help please do let Maria in the office know: office@stursula.ch.

To prepare for this event, we will also be moving the chairs out of the church this Sunday, Sunday 17th November, after the service. If lots of people stay to help this will be a quick job.

COP 29: United Nations Climate Conference: please pray
The 29th climate change conference is taking place in Baku, Aberbaijan from 11th - 22nd November. Severe climate events across our world, like the recent devastating floods in Valencia in Spain, are getting more and more frequent. Let us pray that the nations of the world will agree to take more action and that we will play our part.

Invitation to hear lecture by Rowan Williams at the 150th Anniversary of the Old Catholic Institute in Bern on Thursday 20 November
The Old Catholic Institute at the University of Bern is celebrating its 150th Anniversary. Anglicans are invited to attend the opening ceremony at 18.15, Thursday, 21st November,/ at which former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, will be giving a lecture on: What is Catholic Theology Today? (Flyer attached).

Prayer
As we approach Safeguarding Sunday, I leave you with a prayer for all those who have suffered abuse within the Church.

Loving God,
We pray for all those who have suffered hurt and harm within the family of the Church; whether they are known to us or not, you know them by name.
For those who feel trapped, grant them a way of escape,
for those in pain, bring comfort and healing,
for those who seek justice, give them courage and strength.
As the Church we are one body and if one part suffers,
every part suffers with it;
give to all who suffer people who will listen, support and walk with them.
In Jesus' name.
Amen

With love in Christ,
Helen
